Gaius woke up alive.
Mister, are you alright?
“How did I survive?”
I dragged you back with my talons. You have tears in your robe now.
“So I didn’t fall?”
You did, just didn’t hit the ground.
Gaius is confused. “How did I lose consciousness then?”
Well… I snapped your neck when I pulled too hard.
“…”
…
“And I survived that?”
I bent your neck back immediately after it happened.
Gaius looked at the bird’s talons and touched his own neck.
No, I didn’t use those. I’d have killed you if I did.
Perplexed look.
I just thought that it should go back the way it was and it did.
Gaius’s eyes brightened up. “Magic?”
I suppose that is how it is called. My mother told me that I should do good with it, to find a man and protect his soul and my spirit will be redeemed or something.
Gaius stroked his non-existent beard. “Well… what do you want to do with it?”
I want to learn to use it more skilfully. Humans have spells, don’t they? In the forest there was only magic, but no spells. It was not defined… a vague force. I want to learn the precise art of magic.
“Great,” the old man nodded, “I happen to have some magic books and know a thing or two. Sorcerers are rare in Camelot theses days, so we should look after each other.”
Rare? But I still hear the sound made by the birth of magic humans as frequent as ever and I have not heard of their death. What happened?
“Uther banned magic. In a way. If he finds someone who can magic he… does something horrible to them, and if they survive they cannot use magic again.”
Oh my.
“It’s a long story.”
I have time. Tell me.
“Fine. Better to let you know.
Some years ago, when sorcerers and sorceresses were still friends to the royal family, Ygraine, Queen of Camelot and wife of Uther, could not produce a child. Her husband asked her sorceress friend to help them get an heir with magic.
She did, and by law of magic Ygraine lost her life for her son’s?
“No, no, the family dog was the one who paid the price of life. It was a really good dog. Expert at Frisbee catching. For its sacrifice Uther had a statue made and commanded the the whole city to stop for two minutes in respect that day.”
Oh. What went wrong then?
“Ahem.” He looked around to make sure that no one else was listening. “Ygraine found out that Uther was cheating on her with the pet dragon in the basement.”
